Lung Cancer Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy is an important treatment for lung cancer. Depending on the stage and type of cancer, it may be used to cure the disease, control the tumor, prevent its spread, or relieve symptoms.

Modern techniques such as IMRT, VMAT, IGRT, 4D-CT and SBRT allow radiation to be delivered precisely while protecting healthy tissues.

When Is Radiation Therapy Used?

Radiation may be recommended:

  • Early-stage lung cancer: SBRT can be an effective curative treatment, particularly when surgery is not suitable.
  • Locally advanced lung cancer: Radiation is often combined with chemotherapy, with further systemic treatment considered where appropriate.
  • Small cell lung cancer: Radiation may be combined with chemotherapy for limited-stage disease.
  • Brain or other limited metastases: Stereotactic radiation may be used in selected patients.
  • Advanced cancer: Radiation can relieve symptoms such as pain, bleeding, breathlessness or obstruction.

What Is SBRT?

Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) is a highly precise form of radiation that delivers a high dose to the lung tumor in only a few sessions.

It is particularly useful for selected small, localized lung tumors and for some patients who cannot undergo surgery.

How Is Lung Radiation Planned?

Because lung tumors move with breathing, careful imaging is essential.

A 4D-CT scan may be used to assess tumor movement during breathing. Treatment is then planned using techniques such as IMRT, VMAT and IGRT to accurately target the tumor while minimizing radiation to normal lung, heart, esophagus and spinal cord.

How Many Sessions Are Needed?

The number of treatments depends on the type and stage of cancer.

  • SBRT: Usually only a few sessions
  • Definitive chemoradiation: Often around 5–6 weeks
  • Palliative radiation: Sometimes just 1–5 sessions

Your radiation oncologist will recommend the schedule most appropriate for your condition.

What Are the Possible Side Effects?

Side effects depend on the treatment area and dose. Some patients may experience:

  • Tiredness
  • Cough
  • Mild chest discomfort
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Skin irritation
  • Breathlessness

A small proportion of patients may develop radiation pneumonitis, an inflammation of the lung that can occur weeks to months after treatment. Patients are monitored closely and treatment is available if it occurs.

Is Radiation Therapy Painful?

No. External-beam radiation therapy is painless and does not make you radioactive.

Each treatment usually takes only a few minutes, although additional time is required for positioning and image guidance.

Can Radiation Cure Lung Cancer?

Yes. Radiation can be given with curative intent in selected early-stage and locally advanced lung cancers.
