Palliative Radiotherapy

Palliative radiotherapy is used to relieve symptoms caused by cancer, improve comfort and maintain quality of life.

It is commonly used when cancer has spread to other parts of the body or when a tumor is causing troublesome symptoms.

When Is Palliative Radiotherapy Used?

Radiation may help relieve:

  • Bone pain from cancer spread
  • Spinal cord or nerve compression
  • Brain metastases
  • Bleeding from a tumor
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Breathing difficulty or airway obstruction
  • Pain or pressure caused by a tumor
  • Symptoms from selected lymph-node or soft-tissue metastases

What Is the Goal?

The goal is usually symptom relief rather than cure.

Radiation can:

  • Reduce pain
  • Control bleeding
  • Reduce pressure on nerves or organs
  • Improve mobility and comfort
  • Prevent or treat complications
  • Improve quality of life

In some situations, radiation may also provide longer-term control of a troublesome tumor.

How Many Sessions Are Needed?

One of the major advantages of palliative radiotherapy is that treatment can often be completed quickly.

Depending on the location and clinical situation, treatment may involve:

  • 1 session
  • 5 sessions
  • 10 sessions
  • Or another short schedule

The treatment schedule is selected according to the cancer, symptoms, general health and expected benefit.

How Quickly Does It Work?

The response depends on the symptom and the type of cancer.

Pain relief may begin within a few days, although maximum benefit can take longer.

Bleeding or pressure-related symptoms may also improve after treatment.

Your radiation oncologist will explain when you can expect improvement based on your specific condition.

Is Palliative Radiation Painful?

No. The radiation treatment itself is painless.

You simply lie comfortably on the treatment couch while the radiation is delivered.

You are not radioactive after external-beam radiotherapy.

What Are the Side Effects?

Side effects depend on the part of the body being treated.

They may include:

  • Tiredness
  • Temporary skin irritation
  • Nausea
  • Temporary worsening of pain in some patients
  • Difficulty swallowing when the chest or throat is treated
  • Bowel or bladder symptoms when the abdomen or pelvis is treated

Most side effects are manageable and treatment is planned to minimize unnecessary radiation to healthy tissues.

Is Palliative Radiotherapy Only for End-of-Life Care?

No.

Palliative radiotherapy can be useful at different stages of advanced cancer.

It may help a patient remain active, reduce pain, prevent complications and improve day-to-day quality of life.

Can Palliative Radiotherapy Be Given With Other Cancer Treatments?

Yes. Depending on the situation, radiation may be given alongside or between systemic treatments such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy or immunotherapy.

The treatment schedule is coordinated with the patient’s oncology team.

Why Choose Modern Radiation Therapy?

Modern radiation techniques allow radiation to be focused accurately on the area causing symptoms while limiting exposure to surrounding healthy organs.

The aim is always to achieve maximum symptom relief with minimum treatment burden.
